Why are we so fascinated by the reformations?

The very word “reformation” is shrouded in conflict, bringing to mind new beginnings, partisan church politics, and the dawn of a modern world vision. After Martin Luther posted The Ninety-Five Theses on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, the face of Christianity changed forever.

But while we tend to imagine the Reformation as a single, unified movement, in actuality there were many reformations. What followed, both in the Catholic Church and the emerging Protestant churches, constitutes one of the most significant periods of Western history.

Join award-winning historian, Prof. Christopher M. Bellitto, Ph.D., in The Reformations, a fascinating journey through Church history. Through 12 audio or video lectures, you will uncover multiple Protestant and Catholic reformations before and after Luther and the Council of Trent. Discover not only religious movements, but also the political, social, economic, and cultural contexts of centuries that changed the world.

You will start by looking at the reformations in a broad European and even global perspective. Next, you will follow the Roman Catholic Church as it faced the Avignon papacy and then the Great Western Schism, when two and then even three popes competed for supremacy. You will then explore the theological questions raised by such figures as Erasmus, Luther, John Calvin, and Henry VIII, looking at the variety of ensuing Protestant reforms. Finally, you will see how religious wars transformed Europe and how Roman Catholicism rebounded.

The Reformations is an educational and entertaining course that will give you invaluable insight into the lessons and legacies of the reformations. You don’t want to miss this exciting learning experience.

We recommend the richly illustrated video version of this course.

It is a very broad overview of the Reformation that pieces together a complex event.
The course is well presented. I appreciated the historical scope. It provided an enlightening build up to the events of the various reformations. Review by Ry (Posted on 11/2/2018)
Summer 2018 Survey
I facilitated presenting The Reformations DVD series to a Catholic Studies class given to inmates whose faith is constantly challenged here in the Deep South. They came away with a balance view and a strong foundation of that period of Church History. NYKM was most open to negotiating fees for the necessary copyright agreement on the excellent Study Guide so that the inmates could fully participate in the course. The last course I purchased was on the Reformation. It is a CD and told me so much about the subject. that I have read so many books about the Reformation and none ever gave me the details and brought the topic together so well. This is one reason that I continue to be a customer of Now You Know Media. Usually, I purchase DVD's and I have never been disappointed in any of them. Review by Sister James Ann Germuska, O.S.F. The speaker really knew what he was talking about, and was excited about telling the story. He told both sides without taking sides. Great course!! Review by Larry Linfor Council Bluffs, Iowa. United States (Posted on 4/8/2017)

Christopher Bellitto is a brilliant, engaging lecturer, who is able to stress major movements and events in an engaging, balanced manner. His lectures on the Reformations and Medieval History in Western Europe are among the fairest and most concise I have been privileged to view. Review by Ernie Hines, Lincoln, NE, USA (Posted on 4/6/2017)
Winter Survey: January 2017
The Reformations course was an excellent discussion of the events, people, and political climate that preceded the tumultuous 16th Century and continued for centuries thereafter. The instructor was superb in his knowledge, diction, vocabulary, and jocularity. We presented this as part of our Prison Ministry where our brothers there are under constant attack on their faith. This course gave them a comprehensive perspective of the true Reformations from which they can better defend The Faith. Review by David O'Hagan Tallahassee, FL USA (Posted on 1/3/2017)
Winter Survey: January 2017
The course clearly, yet concisely tackles the complex history of the Reformations. It nicely describes the situation prior to the onset of the Reformation, impartially presents Martin Luther, as well as other characters involved. Basically it is history the way history should be taught. Review by Joe Pisano Drums, PA, USA (Posted on 1/2/2017)
Great detail
Great detail - enough to keep you intent, but not overwhelming. Great presentation, content. Review by Fred (Posted on 10/19/2016)
Extremely informative!
Christopher Bellitto's course on "the reformations" is an extremely informative, bias-free examination of reform and renewal efforts in the Catholic Church, as well as an equally fair and balanced discussion of accompanying Protestant movements. His delivery is crisp and engaging, and the companion graphics--though limited--are helpful. Review by Ernest (Posted on 4/28/2016)
One of the best
Doctor Bellito does a great job of making this study of the reformations a compelling interesting journey into Church history. I enjoyed each session very much, and will listen to this program again. Review by Mark (Posted on 8/3/2012)
Winter Survey: January 2017
The Reformations was a great course!! Covered different aspects of the Reformation from both a Catholic, and a non- Catholic viewpoint. Lots of information. Lesson on King Henry VIII seemed general though, not in depth. But what can be said in just a 25 min lesson about that whole situation historically? Will watch this course again and again. The other courses I got, not so much. Review by Larry Linfor. Council Bluffs, Iowa. U.S. (Posted on 1/4/2017)
A Good Look Reformation from eyes of Catholic Church
The history prior to the reformation and the Catholic Church are great! However, more details should have been given on the differences of views between Catholic Church and that of Luther and Calvin. I found the summary of Protestant history with Zwingli, Luther, Calvin, and Knox lacking and very little said on the anabaptists upsetting. That being does satisfy as an introductory course to the Catholic response to the Reformation. Review by Kingdom Mystic (Posted on 9/6/2012)
