As a Christian, how do you approach the mysteries of death and the afterlife? What language and images can help you speak about the Last Things?

In 12 lectures, you will probe De Novissimis, the “Last Things.” Unlike the study of science, the study of the Last Things, or eschatology, eludes empirical examination. Although modern medicine gives us insights into dying as a physiological process, death (and what happens after death) remains beyond our powers of perception.

Restrained and provocative, this course approaches that dilemma: when scientific proof is lacking, what can we “know”? How can eschatology help you grasp the realities of death and the afterlife, and how can it help you discuss these realities today?

Acknowledging that you cannot know the Last Things with certainty, Dr. Phan does not rely on baseless speculation to give you equivocal answers. Instead, he takes a “this-wordly” approach, spelling out the practical implications of the Last Things for your daily life on Earth.

In this series, you will gain an appreciation for the imaginative language of eschatology—its use of vocabulary and metaphors that arouse human hope about the future. As you examine eschatological methods, you will also acquire the language necessary to speak about the Last Things. Recognizing the religious pluralism of contemporary society, Dr. Phan also seizes the opportunity to mine the wisdom of non-Christian beliefs and practices.

As you move through these inspiring and thought-provoking lectures, you will tackle the most fundamental questions about life, death, and the world to come. As Dr. Phan reminds us, God is not a puzzle to be solved—he is the absolute mystery.

*An erudite scholar who was educated throughout the world and is fluent in several languages, Dr. Phan speaks with a multinational accent.

Clear and accessible for the non-theologian.
Professor Phan's presentation on the Christian perspective on life and life after death is most engaging because it is an successful in being both reasonable and faithful. I have learned much from these lectures and will listen to them again because not all their wisdom can be absorbed at one sitting. Professor Phan's reflections on the Eucharist alone; on the matter of Christ's 'Real Presence and His 'Real Absence', is inspirational. I completely recommend these lectures to anyone interested in the questions of eternal life and the 'parousia' of our Lord. Great work Nowyouknow! and thank you. Spring Survey: April 2017
Appreciated it because it's a topic we hardly ever seriously think about and it led me to give thought about all the myths we have built up over the years about this reality of our life. Review by David Shortt Lower Sackvile, Nova Scotia Canada (Posted on 4/2/2017)
