Discover why Clare of Assisi has such a powerful legacy.

The founder of the Poor Clares, St. Clare is perhaps best known for her iconic staving off of the Saracen raiders with the Holy Eucharist. This vital course invites you to explore Clare’s rich literary heritage, providing you with a window into the timeless wisdom and desires of thirteenth-century medieval women.

These lectures, taught by leading Clare expert Sr. Joan Mueller, draw on years of careful translation and research into Clare’s remarkable writings. You will gain a level of insight into this amazing saint that will inspire your own spirituality.

You will look first at her letters to Agnes of Prague in the context of Clare’s life and writings to gain fresh insight into the issues of Clare’s time and her spirituality. Then explore Clare’s masterpiece Form of Life, the culmination of a monastic lifetime. Together with Agnes, Clare worked to adapt papal decrees according to the Franciscan charism of poverty.

Like the patristic fathers before them, both Francis and Clare experienced their life with God as sacrum commercium—a “divine business deal.” Poverty was therefore embraced as a precious treasure and the very root of one’s conversion to Christ. You will discover how this understanding was developed in Clare’s own words.

If you are interested in gaining deeper insight into the remarkable life and writings of St. Clare of Assisi and Franciscan spirituality, this course will prove invaluable.
