About Your Presenter

Leslie J. Hoppe, O.F.M., Ph.D., is a Franciscan friar and leading expert on the Holy Land. A professor of the Old Testament at the Catholic Theological Union, he has written several books on the Holy Land, Old Testament theology, and archeology, including The Holy City: Jerusalem in the Theology of the Old Testament (Michael Glazier Books), What Are They Saying about Biblical Archaeology? (Paulist Press), The Synagogues and Churches of Ancient Palestine (The Liturgical Press), and A Guide to the Lands of the Bible (The Liturgical Press). He has led pilgrimages through Jerusalem, where he also served as a visiting professor to the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum and as academic director of CTU’s Israel Study Program.

After completing studies for ordination and receiving an M.A. in Theology from Aquinas Institute of Theology in 1971, Fr. Hoppe was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest. He received a Ph.D. in Religion from Northwestern University in 1978, and he has previously served on the faculties of Aquinas Institute of Theology and Mundelein Seminary.

Fr. Hoppe is active in several professional organizations including the Society of Biblical Literature and the Catholic Biblical Association of America. He has been on the editorial board of the Catholic Biblical Quarterly and The Bible Today, and he has also served as the general editor of The Bible Today. Fr. Hoppe has served the Franciscans as a member of the Assumption Province Council, as Provincial Vicar, and most recently as Provincial Minister.
